At a full fuel weight starting at just 375 pounds with a seat height of just 30.7 inches, the YZF-R3 is incredibly light and agile to ride, and inspires confidence in everything from narrow city streets to wide open racing roads for motorcycles. this one.
Yamaha debuted the YZF-R3 for the 2015 model year. By then, the Ninja 300 and CBR 300R had tapped into the new market of entry-level sportbikes. The new R3 is one of the smallest displacements at 321cc, but agile handling and supersport looks make the bike an instant success. The YZF-R3 has been Yamaha’s best-selling motorcycle for several years now.
R3 remained unchanged until 2019; the biggest improvement is the inverted fork, which increases rebound damping by 120 percent and compression damping by 380 percent. The result is a tighter, more responsive bike.
This change also brings a redesign to the YZF-R3. The new reshaped plastic, tank and front end help the small sportbike fit into the R family. The narrow LED eyelid with central air duct shares the average look of its larger sibling while also being more aerodynamic and refined.
Yamaha also fixed some of the problems found in the previous model. The pressure plate is prone to breaking, causing the clutch to not function properly. There was also a fault with the oil pump pressure not being adjusted properly, and the top three clamps were known to crack while riding. All of these issues have been sorted.
The only change made to the 2021 model year is that Yamaha will no longer offer a non-ABS version of the YZF-R3. YZF-R3 Mesin Engine and Performance
For 2021, Yamaha previously gave the YZF-R3 any engine upgrades, still powered by a 321cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine that makes 42 HP and a claimed 21.8 lb-ft of torque. Using a 6-speed multiplate wet clutch, the small sportbike can make it to 60 MPH in 5.5 seconds.
The 180-degree crank design and integrated balancing have less vibration and deliver power in a smoother, smoother way. The YZF-R3 isn’t lacking in laps either, thanks to its dual overhead (DOHC) cameras, four-valve cylinder head and 11.2:1 compression ratio. The quick-revving engine embraces the superbike’s powerband as well, peaking at 12,500 RPM. The US-spec 2021 Yamaha YZF-R3 has a 3.7 gallon tank and has a claimed fuel economy of 56 MPG.
For the new year, Yamaha claims to have increased the rigidity of the inverted front fork, giving the bike more feedback and a feel of front-end control. The Monocross rear shock can be adjusted to assist passengers or cargo, allowing up to 4.9 inches of travel at the rear (5.1 at the front).
The R3 gets some bold 10-inch cast aluminum wheels wrapped in gripping 17-inch Dunlop Sportmax tires front and rear. Stopping power is provided by 298mm hydraulic discs with ABS at the front and 220mm at the rear.
YZF-R3: Technology and Convenience
The riding position on the R3 is on the sportier side but more upright than its larger sibling. This combination makes for a slightly more comfortable canyon carver on urban roads and commuter highways. The seat height is 30.7 inches, which is sized to fit most riders.
Keeping the character of the YZF-R family, Yamaha built the R3 to provide exceptional handling, especially on the track. With a weight distribution close to 50/50 and only 375 pounds when wet, the YZF-R3 is light, agile and angles easily. Combined with the manageable amount of power this is a great bike to learn from.
The revised digital display is colorless but displays the most important bits, clock, tach, fuel gauge, gear position and speedometer. Scroll through the options, and the screen will give you an estimate of your fuel economy, water temperature and trip meter. Not much to brag about here, but it gets the job done.

One thing that Yamaha has increased for 2021 is the price of the YZF-R3. For an additional $300 over the previous year, the starting price of the R3 will be $5,299. Reasonable entry-level prices for an entry-level supersport. Yamaha is offering the new YZF-R7 for $8,999, and the iconic YZF-R1 for $17,399.
