Specifications Yamaha TRX850 2022. Yamaha TRX850 is a sport bike with a 10-valve DOHC 849 cc 270° parallel-twin engine. First released in Japan in 1995, versions for the European market were available from 1996 to 2000.
Which supports Yamaha TRX850 2022
Basically, it’s from the 849cc 360 degree crank TDM850 motorcycle. The TRX was codenamed ‘Project 005’ and the team decided to install a 270-degree crank, which mimics the beat of the 90-degree V-angle twin. Yamaha has a lot of experience with this layout thanks to the work of the Super Tenere racers. Stephane Peterhansel and Edi Orioli used the 270-degree crank in their YZE850 engine to win the Dakar in 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. Impressive isn’t it?
Design and development
Animation with different crankshaft angles The TRX has a half fairing, clip-on handlebars, and a slightly rear-adjusted footrest. The front fork is conventional telescopic, and the rear suspension is a high-level monoshock unit. Effective as a factory-made café racer, there is very little provision for the pillion passenger.
The TRX engine is derived from the one on the Yamaha TDM850, but the TRX is lighter, lower and sportier than its TDM stablemate. The engine has five valves per cylinder, three intakes and two exhausts; inlet is 26 mm, exhaust is 28 mm. Unusually for a dry sump design, the oil tank is not located far away, but is an integral part of the engine, sitting above the gearbox.
This simplifies manufacturing, avoids external oil lines, and provides faster oil heating. The shallow sump allows the engine to be positioned lower, for optimal CG position. The 360° crankshaft of the original TDM was changed to a 270° crankshaft in 1996, after which the TRX and TDM used the same engine and transmission. The machine has a balance shaft to smooth out residual vibrations. In 2000 Yamaha stopped making the TRX, while the TDM series, enlarged to 900 cc, remained in production until 2011.

The TRX is designed to compete in the market with the Ducati 900SS V-twin, whose tubular trellis frame is imitated. Despite being cheaply developed from Yamaha’s “dumpster”, using the TDM850 engine, the TRX performs well and has a “coherent identity of its own”. In Motorcycle News (MCN) said the TRX was “the best kept secret in motorcycles” and a “forgotten gem”, comparing it to the 270° Norton Commando 961. In 2014, Steve Cooper said it was, “A man’s very thinking sport bike, twin this slightly odd one is starting to achieve cult status and for good reason”.
Despite being much cheaper than the Ducati, the TRX did not sell well, and production ceased in 2000 with no clear successor. Although manufacturers have occasionally adopted the parallel-twin format for high-performance sportbikes, (such as the 2004-2007 MZ 1000S and Métisse Mk5), MCN reports that parallel twins attract fewer buyers. Compared to V-twins, parallel twins have fewer components and lower manufacturing costs, prompting renewed interest, particularly the 270 crankshaft twin. Although Visor Down was hesitant, saying, “They will never be as popular as the inline-fours, they will never be as iconic as the V-twin, and they will never have the exotic feel of a triple.. the parallel-twin layout is experiencing a revival: the new Honda Africa Twin is a 270° parallel twin rather than the previous V-twin incarnation; and the Royal Enfield Interceptor The best-selling 650 has a 270° crank.

The Yamaha TRX850 uses a parallel twin which is also used on the Yamaha TDM850. It produces less power than the sports 600s of the same era but is much more rugged and more satisfying to use thanks to that twin-cylinder character. The 270-degree crank (one piston is a quarter cycle behind the other) makes the Yamaha TRX850 feel like a V-twin.
Ride quality & brakes
A little bouncy when new – most Yamaha TRX850s would benefit from a minimal amount of new fork and spring oil now. But the Yamaha TRX850 remains neutral and agile and has a decent sports bike feel without being intimidating. Brakes, again, were fine in their day, but Yamaha calipers are notorious for jamming so strips and grease may be necessary.
Value vs rival Yamaha TRX850 2022
A few years ago the Yamaha TRX850 was one of the biggest offerings on the market. Unfortunately prices have reached a level where they haven’t dropped any further and the Suzuki SV650 offers a similar experience at a reasonable price too. Very few frills on the Yamaha TRX850. There’s some luggage space under mersi pillion but that’s about it. Headlights and mirrors are on the bad side. Comfort isn’t brilliant for the pillion but it’s okay for the rider. The Yamaha TRX850’s wind protection makes sense but it’s a bit of a burden on the wrist – better in speed than in the city.
